Captain's Spring Message - April 2008

Bertie Joel Cup Finalists - 2004

Bertie Joel Cup Finalists - 2004

Dear Fellow Club Member

The 2008 season is almost upon us. It has been great to see so many new and old members at indoor nets over the past 6 weeks. I think the rust is nearly out of my game!

In this communication I will outline the days outdoor nets will be held, when start of season practice matches will be held, how Selections will occur during the season and a reminder on membership and match fees.

2008 Outdoor Nets

·         Sat 1XI and Sat 2XI nets will be held on Wednesdays starting at 6:30pm on the turf wicket (1st net 23rd April 2008)

·         Sat 3XI and Sat 4XI nets will be held on Thursdays starting at 6:30pm on the turf wicket (1st net 24th April 2008)

·         All other squads will have access to the synthetic nets on either day

·         The nets are held at the OWCC Ground in Coombe Lane

2008 Season Early Fixtures

Selection

The captains will be meeting every Monday night to pick the teams for the following weekend. The captains will aim to publish all teams by Tuesday at 7pm on the play cricket website. The Communications officer will then include these teams in his update of the OWCC website and the creation of the paper circular.

The captains will be picking the teams based on the availabilities they know at that time. If a member has not made their availability known they will not be selected. If a member calls on later in the week every effort will be made to ensure they play in a game but it will most likely be for a lower team than they would otherwise have been selected for.

Captains will collect availabilities after each match however it is the member’s responsibility to update the play-cricket website (http://oldwimbledonians.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp) with their availabilities by 6pm on Monday. Instructions on how to register with the site, update your details, advise your availability, etc can be found under the Play-Cricket link on the OWCC website (www.owcc.org.uk).

If a member calls off after being selected without due cause this will be taken into account during future selection discussions.

On a Saturday the best eligible (ie fully paid up) members who have advised they are available to play will be selected for the highest teams. If a player calls off unexpectedly then a player from the next lower team will be called up to replace them. However the Captain who “lost” their player will make every effort to help the Captain who “gave up” their player find a replacement player.

As Sunday is recognised as a more social day the club is simply fielding 3XI’s rather than a hierarchical 1XI, 2XI and 3XI. This means the Captains will take into account a members preference for which side they would prefer to play in when making selection decisions and this may result in players moving from the 1XI to the 3XI or vice versa depending on availabilities and preferences.

Membership 2008

The cost of membership in 2008 will be:

(or paid before 1st match played if 1st match played is after 31 May)

Membership is due and payable before a player plays a match for the club. After the 31st of May if a player has not paid his membership and he has played two matches for the club he WILL NOT BE SELECTED for any future fixtures until his membership is paid in full (at the higher rate).

New Members

Match Fees

Match fees for the 2008 season will remain at £8.00 for the first match of the weekend and £5.00 for the second match of the weekend for Full members.

Match fees will be £5.00 for each match for Student / Unemployed members (no discount for second match in a weekend).

If a player fails to pay their match fees at the next match after missing a payment they WILL NOT BE SELECTED until the missing payments are made.

Social Functions

In order to give members the opportunity to gather socially outside of cricket a number of social events will be organised throughout 2008. These are likely to include:

I look forward to meeting you all at these events and making them both a social success and a financial success for the club.

Sponsors

Please remember that in order to reduce the financial burden on the members of the club we actively seek sponsorship for the club. You can help in this area by:

The links through to our sponsors are on both the OWCC website and the play-cricket website. Currently our sponsors are:

And our Generous Colts Section Sponsors:

The sponsor of the surrey championship is:

Working Party

To get us ready for the great outdoors we will be running a working party on Saturday the 19th of April. This will allow us to ensure the nets, covers, score hut, change rooms, etc are ready to go for the new season. Please mark the date in your diaries as we need as many people as possible to come down to ensure all the work gets done. Hopefully the chairman will again put on a number of jugs of beer to keep the workers happy!

To Finish Up

The season is nearly here and I can’t wait for the first proper match of the season. Look forward to seeing you there.

As always if you want to discuss any of the points raised above please feel free to email me at martinsmith88@btinternet.com or call me on my mobile on 079 6612 8872.

Kind Regards

Martin
